The long-standing murder case of a Nanjing Medical University student has finally been broken by Nanjing Police. It was the various advances in analysing forensic evidence available today which led to the arrest of a man yesterday, 23 February, 2020.

Lin Mou (林某) was a senior student in Nanjing Medical University in Gulou District in 1992. She disappeared on 24 March at approximately 10.30 pm after her studies in a teaching building.

Her umbrella was discovered 4 days later, leading to her body being found nearby. The murderer had raped her and thrown her body into a courtyard sewer.

Lin had had a close relationship with her roommate, who was the one to raise the alarm when Lin failed to show for class the following day.

Following the crimes, Nanjing Police established a special task force to carry out the investigation. However, their work was impeded due to heavy rainfall in Nanjing on the night of 24 March, 1992. With evidence washed away and DNA technology still in its infancy, the perpetrator eluded the authorities until yesterday.

The breakthrough came with the investigation team’s newly-obtained major clues that within hours led to the arrest of the suspect, Ma Jigang (麻继钢). Born 2 October, 1966, Ma was a driver for SUMEC, a well-renowned, Nanjing-based company that is a key member of the China National Machinery Industry Corporation (SINOMACH).

Ma joined the company the same year as the murder.

He also owned a business that sold dogs, mainly German Shepherds, which he started after a business trip to Germany for SUMEC.

Reporters for the Modern Express newspaper spoke to Ma’s colleagues and friends. They regarded him as kind and loyal and never for a second imagined that he would be arrested for rape and murder. The case continues.
