Temperature checks are becoming the norm in Nanjing, as the city continues the fight against the outbreak of coronavirus 19-nCoV. Office buildings, shops and now public transportation have all now begun the practice.
The Nanjing Metro has today started to enhance screening of passengers entering stations across the network. Passengers are being asked to cooperate with staff in taking a temperature check at designated points.
Metro staff shall report passengers found with a temperature over 37.3°C and persuade them to leave the station, says bulletin board, Dissemination Nanjing.
The “Nanjing City Notice on the Implementation of Relevant Measures for Wearing Masks in Public Places” also requests passengers to wear masks during their time on the metro. Staff will discourage passengers who refuse to comply from entering the station.

“Green Doors” in Xinjiekou Station
Xinjiekou Station has also installed two green, infrared, body-temperature scanners.
Already dubbed the “Green Doors”, an alarm on the devices will sound when a passenger’s temperature is found to be over 37.3°C. Staff will then perform a secondary measurement. If necessary, they will then notify the nearby health and epidemic prevention department.
The devices are located by the station’s north and south security points.

In addition to temperature checks, Nanjing Metro is also suspending services to some stations on two lines in the network’s rural extremities. Firstly, on Line S8, from Shenqiao to the terminus, Jinniuhu; a total of three stations. Secondly, on Line S3, from Maweixu to the terminus, Gaojiachong; a total of seven stations.
More to Good Hygiene on the Nanjing Metro than just Temperature Checks
Hygiene on the Nanjing Metro has come a long way. Before the current coronavirus outbreak, the metro banned food and drink as far back as July, 2014.
The Nanjinger has also previously told the heart-warming story of a woman who has been cleaning the Nanjing Metro for 13 years. Ms. Yang Yuegao is Head of Cleaning at Line 1 terminus, Maigaoqiao. Her and her team have precisely 3 minutes to make a train spotless before its return southward.
