Hu Jia, a graduate student in the College of Horticulture and Plant Protection at Yangzhou University, has rescued a stray dog on campus that was infected with a fatal virus, according to a Jiangsu media report on Oct 31.

She delivered the dog to a veterinary hospital for treatment and raised 1,500 yuan ($230) through online crowdfunding to cover the medical expenses.

The stray dog is named Ke Le, a friendly canine that often stays on the Yangzhou University campus. When Hu Jia noticed Ke Le appeared emaciated and was vomiting, among other symptoms, she immediately sent Ke Le to the hospital.

The high cost of treatment made it difficult for Hu Jia to afford the care, so she launched a crowdfunding campaign on the internet. After seeing her post, Hu Jia’s laboratory classmates, friends and other netizens helped raise enough funds within one day to cover the costs.

Ke Le has now fully recovered.
