War Heroes Return Home to Nanjing as Hubei Reports 1 New Case

five flights landing in Nanjing on Monday had some very special passengers on board. War heroes in the fight against Covid-19 were returning as victors. As Hubei Province reported just one new case, their military-style operation had succeeded. It was time to go home.

Martin Luther King once said, “If a man hasn’t discovered something that he will die for, he isn’t fit to live”. The doctors and nurses had set out in the dead of winter in the full knowledge they may not return. On Monday, they came back in glorious spring weather to a heroes’ welcome.

Only one newly diagnosed Covid-19 case was reported in Hubei Province yesterday, as was the case the previous day. With the epidemic prevention and control situation improving day by day, so rescue teams from all over the country are coming home.

Our very own Jiangsu Province sent a total of 2,802 medical staff from various healthcare institutions to support Hubei Province, specifically the cities of Wuhan and Huangshi. The first of these arrived in Wuhan on 25 January, reported Healthy Nanjing.

Today, an initial batch of seven teams comprising 709 doctors and nurses set out to Wuhan Tianhe Airport on Monday morning. Police lined parts of the route, saluting the motorcade.

Five specially charted planes from China Eastern Airlines and Shenzhen Airlines were waiting to fly them back to Nanjing.

A few hours later, those aboard descended the boarding stairs to the aircraft at Nanjing Lukou International Airport to blazing red banners, waving flags and more salutes from a Lukou Airport security detail.

The teams had fought the epidemic in the South Central Hospital Affiliated to Wuhan University and the Fangcang Hospital of Wuhan Sports Centre, as well as the First People’s Hospital, Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital and Fangcang Hospital, all of Jiangxia District in Wuhan.
