This day, 6 August, in 1946, Chairman Mao Zedong first proposed the “middle ground” theory when he met with American journalist, Anna Louise Strong, in reference to the extremely vast area between the United States and the Soviet Union, in which many capitalist countries, colonial and semi-colonial countries were located. He deeply sympathised with, and paid close attention to, the surging national independence and liberation movements in the world, and demanded to break the monopoly of the two superpowers, the United States and the Soviet Union, in world power, and allow China, Europe, Japan and the third world to play a greater role in international affairs.
