Chances are that, wherever you live in Nanjing, you are but a short taxi ride from a branch of Carrefour, Auchan, Metro or another supermarket that stocks foreign groceries.

Foreign Supermarkets in Nanjing

Carrefour 家乐福

Good range of dairy products, especially imported butter, cream and cheese, plus snacks, pasta and wine. Visit the Carrefour website.

  • B1, Jinyuan Plaza, 341 Jiangdong Zhong Lu 江东中路341号金源广场B1

Auchan 欧尚

Another French hypermarché with, as you would expect, cheap wine. Sadly, the city’s widest selection of cheese has dwindled dramatically of late. Don’t get your hopes up. Self check out is a breeze. Visit the Auchan website.

  • 11 Qinhuai Lu 秦淮路11号
  • 866 Yingtian Da Jie 应天大街866号

Metro 麦德龙

Originally a B2B operation in which private individuals can now shop that carries a wide selection of foreign foods plus wines, beers and sprits. App required for self check out; a painful process but staff are willing to help. Very busy at peak times. Visit the Metro website.

Chinese Supermarkets with Imported Goods in Nanjing

Hema 盒马

Not to be confused with the Dutch brand of the same name. The Alibaba-owned chain with in excess of 20 locations in Nanjing offers likely the city’s widest selection of imported goods and beef-steak offerings likely Nanjing’s best, outside of any restaurant (and good value at around ¥30). Only downfalls are the Hema app is absolutely required and self check out is the only option, and Hema bread is deplorable. Steer clear at peak times, especially from the in-store dining areas. The upside is staff are more than happy to sell a VIP membership (¥200 at time of writing) for 20 percent discount on all future purchases (which can all be done online for home delivery, within 30 minutes in a less-than-3-kilometre radius) and some free on-the-spot goodies. Visit the Hema website.

Suguo 苏果

As the Nanjing retailer that comes in many forms, the bigger Suguo shops invariably have an imported-goods section. There are even a number of product lines by giant UK retailer, Tesco. Read all about that in our Suguo for Dummies guide.

BHG Marketplace

BHG stands for Beijing Hualian Group, while Hualian is a nationwide chain of mini marts. Features a very large stock of imported goods plus fresh organic fruit and veg plus passable sliced bread. Many items are pricey, but that keeps the crowds away. Visit the Beijing Hualian website.

One need also be a little wary. It would probably hit the headlines if Carrefour, Auchan or Metro were found to be setting counterfeit goods, but The Nanjinger found fake Lego on the shelves of BHG, in its now-closed location in Raydu Mall.

Not to be confused with BHG Lifestyle, an altogether more Chinese experience (but same logo) with a very limited selection of imported goods.
