This day, 9 August, in 1953, Chinese swimmer, Wu Chuanyu, won the men’s 100-metre backstroke championship with a time of 1 minute, 8.4 seconds, at the 4th World Festival of Youth and Students in Bucharest, Romania, becoming the first Chinese swimmer to win a gold medal in an international competition.
