27 August 2018, Nanjing’s first recycling “intelligent garbage sorting machines” were put to use in Liuhe District.
The Urban Management Bureau told reporters from the Yangtze Evening News that the public can sort, weigh and receive money back via mobile phones using the machines.
Six boxes erected in a residential area display that to be recycled within each one. The central unit is used for registering and taking note of how much a person has recycled.
The public can scan the screen using their WeChat, which will lead them to use an inbuilt APP. Each time people recycle something that qualifies for rebate, scanning is required.
Prices displayed on the screen indicate a payback of ¥0.7 per 1kg for plastics,¥0.8 per 1kg for paper,¥0.2 per 1kg for textiles and ¥0.6 per kg for metals. Once a person’s recycled balance reaches¥10 cash, can be withdrawn.
Staff from the Liuhe District Waste Branch say this new waste sorting equipment will help guide people in the better practices of recycling.
