Events of the last few days have been enough to make us wonder if we are ever going to escape. Yet, more light is at the end of the tunnel. For now is the time for a host of new or restored international flights to continue China’s reconnection with the outside world.

As far as we in Nanjing are concerned, that transformation is already underway. On Sunday, 16 October, Juneyao Airlines began flying to Osaka, Japan, with flight number HO1610.

Going forward and still out of Nanjing, China Eastern Airlines is the one to watch. The airline will commence flights to and from Tokyo, Japan, on 26 October, and Seoul, South Korea, the day before.

Also of note is the unconfirmed report that Spring Airlines shall be commencing a flight between Nanjing and Phnom Penh, Cambodia, in the near future, as well as several other international destinations from various Chinese cities. But like its existing flight from Nanjing to Tokyo, the Phnom Penh hop may well only turn out to be a fortnightly affair.

From elsewhere in China, China Eastern shall be flying from Qingdao to Tokyo and Yantai to Seoul from 29 October. Next month, that airline shall also resume flights from to Hangzhou to Manila, Phillippines; and from Kunming to Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam.

For those wishing to go further afield, reports emerged yesterday, 17 October, that China Southern Airlines plans to resume its links between Guangzhou and Jakarta, Indonesia; Dubai, UAE; Manila; Bangkok, Thailand; and Phnom Penh. That airline shall also once again be flying between Dalian and Tokyo.

Hainan Airlines meanwhile, has announced it shall shortly resume flights from Beijing to Brussels, Belguim; Moscow, Russia; Belgrade, Serbia; Berlin, Germany; and Manchester, UK. Out of Chongqing, the airline will begin flights to Madrid, Spain; out of Shenzen to Vancouver, Canada; and out of Dalian to Tokyo and Seoul.

There is also encouraging news in that airlines (Chinese at least) are slowly being permitted to operate more than one flight per week on any one international route.

Hainan Airlines shall be flying from Chongqing to Rome, Italy, twice a week from 6 November, while the same will be true for China Eastern’s Kunming to Phnom Penh route from 24 October.

According to The Paper, the move by many airlines to begin/restart such services is a response in implementing the relevant requirements of the State Council as to an orderly increasing the number of passenger flights in and out of China as soon as possible.
