This day, 12 April, in 1847, Rong Hong arrived in New York, USA, to study. Rong (1828-1912), a Cantonese born into a poor peasant family, studied in a church primary school in Macau and the Morrison church school in Hong Kong. In the US, Rong attended Yale University and received a bachelor’s degree in 1854, becoming the very first Chinese student to graduate in the US.
