This day, 18 August, in 1949, Mao Zedong published the article, “Farewell, Leighton Stuart”. Appointed as the US Ambassador to China in July 1946, Marshall J. Leighton Stuart played the role of mediator between the KMT and the Communist Party, making the American Embassy on Xikang Lu in Nanjing the focus of the world’s attention. Leighton Stuart had maintained his personal residence in Nanjing at 33-2 Qingdao Lu.
