This day, 21 March, in 1960, South African police shot and killed 69 people who were participating in a peaceful demonstration against apartheid’s “pass laws” in Sharpeville. 6 years later, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 21 March as the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. China was one of the first countries to sign on.
