This day, 22 April, in 1958, construction of the Monument to the People’s Heroes in Tianamen Square in Beijing was completed. Having taken almost 6 years to build, the 37.94-metre tall obelisk weighs over 10,000 tonnes and is comprised of approximately 17,000 pieces of marble and granite. Engraved in gold foil upon it in the hand of Mao Zedong are the words “The people’s heroes will live forever”.
