This day, 23 August, in 1884, the opening engagement in the Battle of Fuzhou took place, fought between the navies of France and Qing-Dynasty China. Officers and sailors of the Chinese ships died heroically; the entire Fujian Navy was wiped out and the Mawei Shipyard destroyed, turning a painful page in modern Chinese naval history.
