This day, 8 May (Beijing time 05:45), 1999, during NATO’s bombing of Yugoslavia in Operation Allied Force, five US missiles struck the Chinese Embassy in Belgrade. Despite being claimed an accident, evidence otherwise emerged revealing the Embassy was used to transmit Yugoslav military communications. Ahead of a visit to Serbia on the attack’s 25th anniversary in 2024, Xi Jinping said, “This we should never forget”.
