Nanjing Forest Music Festival 2022 fell on 8 September, taking place in the Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum Music Stage, providing music fans with an enjoyable audio-visual experience in a beautiful and truly unique setting.
With doves and fireflies flying up and down and dancing all around, you may wonder at how can the concert can seem to be so attractive? Actually, the answer lies in academia.
Looking from above, it is plain to see that the Music Stage is a semi circle, in the centre of which is laid the stage, with a large screen wall (16.67 metres x 11.33 metres) behind it. This highly symmetric form likely provides for a kind of psychological comfort.
The auditorium was built on a natural slope running down to the stage, a descent of some 3 metres. Supposing on the stage stands a man of medium height, draw a line connecting him and different seats. It is easy to draw the conclusion that the audience can see the stage clearly from each seat, according to the theory of rectilinear propagation.
The screen wall is a reference to ancient Greek architectural style, while also including elements of Jiangnan (south of the Yangtze River) gardens. With an aspect ratio of 0.68 (close to the golden ratio of 0.618), it guarantees us the best visual enjoyment.
When it comes to its practical use, the structure is not only artistic, but also scientifically designed for concerts. Physically speaking, the screen wall is made of materials which is difficult for sounds to traverse. But they are reflected, with those travelling directly to the audience being superimposed on reflected sounds in the human brain, creating a kind of surround sound. Similarly, the crescent-shaped lotus pond, in a half-moon shape in front of the stage, also effectively reflects sound.
Attending the concert, in the background is a forest without frontiers, and while l listening to the harmonious music, we must surely feel a sense of relief. Now you can proudly tell your friend that you know why this thing is so perfect. Et vous?
