A little local colour. Wandering through the small lanes in central Nanjing is always fascinating, with their countless tiny shops and eateries. However, having the company of a local helps. There is one interesting place near Xinjiekou, that looks much like many others, except that the businesses look a little more upmarket and cared for. The restaurants have interesting decor, and the many clothes retailers appear to be more expensive. It is known by Nanjingers as “Mistress Street“. Why? The story goes that most of the businesses are owned by the mistresses of rich powerful men [there are other interesting variations of the story; Ed.]. Impossible to know for sure, but just in case, it’s exact location is not being revealed here.

Coming almost to a standstill at times, the small stream near Xianlin Lake swells dramatically when it rains. Just lately, it has become the focus of a huge effort. It’s not clear, but it looks like it is being redirected to keep it further from the lake. Stay tuned for an update.
