What’s blue and white and goes 299 kilometres per hour at Nanjing Lukou International Airport? China Southern Airlines, right?

Wrong.

The correct answer is in fact a motorcyclist racing along at two and half times the speed limit. As reported by The Paper, the incident took place in the afternoon of 26 February on Nanjing’s airport expressway near Lukou Airport itself. After several road users captured the speeding bike with their smartphones and posted them online, the videos quickly became viral, attracting the attention of the police.

Upon investigating the evidence captured by roadside cameras, the bike was found to be a BMW “superbike” clocked doing 299 kmh, a speed that would give one of China’s world-famous high speed trains a run for its money.

Travelling in a northerly direction along the expressway, the rider passed dozens of cars while changing lanes many times and twice using the lane reserved for emergency use.

Nanjing Police traced the bike to Shuyang County, bordering the city of Suqian in north Jiangsu, and with the cooperation of local forces, detained the suspect, a young man named Shi Mou on 1 March. The 23-year old was also found to not have a driving licence.

Shi was then more slowly transferred back to Nanjing where he is being detained, facing the charges of dangerous driving and driving without a licence.
