The masks have started coming off in a sign of confidence among the people of Jiangning District in Nanjing that things are getting back to normal. It’s also driven by three significant victories of late in the city’s war on Omicron.

The first of those is our case numbers. For the past 3 days straight, Nanjing has recorded just one new COVID positive case per day. That’s victory number 1.

Next was the unexpected and sudden reopening of the Nanjing Metro this morning, 30 May, across Jiangning, that the Nanjing Metro announced yesterday afternoon via their official WeChat account.

At 06:00 today, lines S1, S7 and S7 began running trains again after a 12-day shutdown as part of efforts to curb extended transmission by any COVID positive cases.

Elsewhere on the network, lines 1, 3 and S8, which had their services curtailed, were as of this morning back up and running across their lengths.

Good news perhaps for commuters whose bosses are fond of office-based working, but not for those who need make the trip out to Jurong on Line S6. That line remains closed for now on account it traverses Nanjing’s city boundary with neighbouring Zhenjiang City.

Finally, victory number 3 came in the form of another piece of welcome news for parents. From tomorrow, on-campus learning shall recommence for junior middle school students, as well as those set to take the vocational education college entrance examination.

Like their classmates in other year groups, these students had been online in their learning since 16 March.

In addition, The Paper reports that the return for other school grades shall be announced after approval by the local epidemic prevention and control headquarters.

But of course still no word as to getting children enrolled at Nanjing’s international schools back on campus in the southern part of the city. That however, could also change very quickly. Might the rest of the younger members of Nanjing’s international community be returning to school as early as next week?
