Celebrating the anniversary of the Communist Party and giving our free haircuts may not initially appear to have anything in common. But they do. And it’s down to a concept known as “charity on the doorstep” that is becoming a thing in Nanjing.

There came a burst of laughter from the Cultural Square of an elderly care service centre in Qiaoli Village of Gaochun District in Nanjing yesterday, 20 April. It turned out the source of the outcry was the effort of a volunteer barber, cutting the hair of old villagers one by one.

With the centenary of the Communist Party on 1 July of this year, great importance has been attached to studying Party history and education mobilisation, together with the contemplation of the Party’s core principles.

Such calls for serving the masses and solving the actual needs of the masses, based on reality. To this end, Qiaoli Village has taken serving the elderly as its starting point.

In order to provide this care, the service centre and Qiaoli Village jointly organised charity haircuts for more than 50 elderly people, reflecting the traditional Chinese virtues of respecting and loving the elderly.

It is understood that the haircut volunteers arrived early yesterday to set up chairs for the haircuts. Upon hearing the news, the old villagers flocked to the scene, reports the Yangtze Evening News.

Since the launch of the Party history and education mobilisation effort, Qiaoli Village has organised regular charity haircuts, with at least 50 elderly people attending each time.

Such public welfare services have become very popular. A 70-year-old old man surnamed Rui commented happily that thanks to the volunteers, he can enjoy a haircut every month.

Rui said that not only does it provide convenience, but it is also free. And the service is on the doorstep of his house. Rui could not be happier.
