While everyone believes that getting vaccinated against COVID is undoubtedly a great idea, large swathes of the population remain put off by the possible side effects. Those concerns have now been confirmed by the highest medical authority.

Making an appearance yesterday on the live broadcast “Political Hotline” (政风热线) was Tian Feng (田丰), director of the Jiangsu Provincial Drug Administration. During the report, Tian said that adverse reactions to vaccinations being administered in Jiangsu are currently within the controllable range.

Just as other countries have, China attaches great importance to vaccine research and development. Great manpower, materials and financial resources have been invested in order to bring the project to fruition.

With strict regulations on their storage and transportation, the general public should have full confidence in China’s vaccines.

Vaccines utilised in Jiangsu mainly consist of the three inactivated varieties produced by Sinopharm, Sinovac and ZFSW. In Nanjing, Sinovac has been chosen as the preferred supplier.

Clinical trials and post-market monitoring have found that the main adverse reactions are localised, manifested in pain and swelling at the point of vaccination. In addition, there may be some systemic symptoms, such as headaches, fatigue and a small fever.

Such side effects do not require special treatment and will generally subside naturally after 1 or 2 days. In the event symptoms do not subside, medical treatment should be sought.

Previously, at an 11 April press conference, Tian pointed out the four types of people who should not be vaccinated, reported Nanjing Daily.

They comprise anyone who has had a severe allergic reaction to a previous vaccination, sufferers of any neurological diseases (such as transverse myelitis or epilepsy), those with a high fever or other chronic disease, and pregnant women.

Tian made no mention of the recent media coverage surrounding the efficiency of China’s vaccines. Given this and the official announcements as to side effects, the local populace is likely to remain on their guard for some time to come.
