This day, 29 August, in 1842, the “Nanjing Treaty”, ceding Hong Kong to Britain, was signed on board HMS Cornwallis, at anchor in the Yangtze River in Nanjing, as the first so-called “unequal treaty” imposed upon the Chinese people by a colonial-western power in modern times.
