The grand opening of the eastern section of the Wanda Mall in Nanjing’s Xianlin area in Qixia district took place last Friday, 1 June, 2018.

Anticipating the crowd, special arrangements turned out to be few and far between. Increased frequency of the Metro? No. More buses? No. Four wheels therefore became the order of the day, becoming an ocean of traffic. Vehicles parked illegally everywhere, while drivers snailed around looking for a spot.

At the main intersection, on Friday, police waved their arms enthusiastically, but it was still a mess. By Sunday, they had given up and just watched. While the weekend was slightly better, weekdays were relatively quiet.

Maybe it will improve this weekend for those in the mood to visit. Metro line 4 is recommended, getting off at Xianlin Hu station, the last stop. Inside the mall is the huge indoor theme (China) park alongside a standard retail spread with mass market brands.

Low end eateries occupy the ground floor of the latest Wanda mall, and restaurants the top floor. The interestingly named “International Street” remains a mystery as it has yet to become operational.
