Nanjing’s finest have taken down a fugitive in dramatic fashion on a beach in the island paradise of Sanya. The man, who had remained at large for 18 years, was the third and final suspect in a 2003 murder in southern China.

The homocide took place on 3 November, 2003, in Guangdong Province’s Zhongshan City, birthplace of Sun Yat-sen (then Xiangshan County).

Two individuals, identified as participating in the homicide, were quickly arrested, subsequently receiving the death penalty. But a third man remained at large.

At the end of last year, public security officers in Jianye District discovered that the fugitive, surnamed Kuang, had connections in Nanjing. They also learned that he may be hiding in Guangdong or Hainan provinces, together with other places.

Back in 2004, Kuang had come to Nanjing to visit his sister. He remained here under a false identity, but soon left. In cooperation with local police, Nanjing’s officers visited Zhongshan and Sanya, and were eventually able to identify Kuang’s whereabouts.

He had been living incognito in Sanya for many years, serving as the deputy director for a local dragon fruit company, reports Nanjing Daily.

But the problem was Kuang rarely showed his face at the operation, relying on his employees to handle matters. Nanjing’s police had no choice but to formulate a cunning plan.

Turning up unannounced at the dragon fruit company on 18 January, officers deliberately had a dispute with the firm security. With the two sides in a heated negotiation, Kuang, as the person in charge, rode his motorcycle to the scene to deal with the matter. As soon as he approached, the prepared officers finally had Kuang within their grasp.

Nanjing police confirmed yesterday, 27 February, that the arrest had taken place and that Kuang was indeed the final suspect in the 2003 murder.

As the officers took him down, they identified themselves as Nanjing police. The first sentence out of Kuang’s mouth was, “It’s really over this time”.
